My Image on the Cover of the ASMP Bulletin Spring Issue

This image was chosen as the cover image of ASMP Bulletin Spring Issue.  For those of you not familiar, ASMP is the American Society of Media Photographers.  Since this is one of the largest organizations of professional photographers in America, I am highly honored that my image was chosen for the cover of this esteemed publication.  Earlier this year I joined Evostock, a virtual stock agency hosted by Photoshelter.  ASMP decided to do an article about Evostock for the Spring Issue.  Evostock has more than 50 photographers so choosing my image for the cover from all of the images of the 50 photographers in Evostock is truely an honor.

This image’s title is White Heron Dance.  The White Heron Dance or Shirasagi no Mai in Japanese is a festival performed on the second Sunday of April at Sensoji Temple in Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan.  This festival has a history of over 1,100 years and was originally performed at Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto to ward off evil spirits.  5 young girls dress up in elaborate costumes of white herons and perform a dance in front of a large crowd.

This image is one of my Zipangu series.  (These are all images of Japan.  Zipangu is the word used by Marco Polo for Japan and is the origin of the English word Japan.)   I like to shoot closeup images at Japanese festivals.  I usually compose an image which does not include the eyes.  It is human nature to always look at the eyes of another person first.  By not including the eyes of the subject, the viewer can focus on the details of this intricate costume and also see the graphic design of the image itself.  You can see other images in my Zipangu series by clicking this url,  http://robtilleyphotos.com/Zipangu/portfolioZP1.htm
